Education for People with Disabilities
Our driver evaluation program and training program is geared to helping the person with a disability determine his/her capabilities behind the wheel, so as to help ensure that he/she will have an independent future.
Many people with disabilities are able to drive using specially equipped vehicles. A standard car with hand controls is available.
Our evaluation will help determine what type of equipment will be necessary for the candidate to be able to drive.
The evaluation consists of:
- Assessing an individual's need for adaptive equipment
- Checking simple and complex reaction timing
- Verifying visual acuity
- Testing field of vision and depth perception
- Traffic law knowledge
- Traffic sign knowledge
- Ability to handle the vehicle
We feature individual counseling to form a driving plan. We also feature behind the wheel instruction for the experienced driver who has recently become disabled or the person with a disability who has no previous driving experience. We will also make recommendations to help determine the right adaptive equipment to suit individual driver needs.
All behind the wheel instruction is geared to individual needs and abilities. Lesson emphasizes defensive driving, city, freeway and rural driving, and preparation for the state road test.
